Hospital declares outbreak of human parainfluenza virus

Sault Area Hospital has declared an outbreak of parainfluenza virus 3 (HPIV-3) on level 3B. Effective immediately, only approved essential caregivers are permitted to visit that unit of the hospital.

HPIV-3 is one of a group of common viruses known as human parainfluenza viruses (HPIV) that cause various respiratory illnesses. Symptoms may include fever, runny nose, and cough. HPIV-3 can also cause bronchiolitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia.

Infants and young children are particularly susceptible to HPIV-3 infections, though older adults and those with a weakened immune system are also at risk for complications. HPIVs are usually spread from an infected person to others through coughing, sneezing, and/or touching.

All healthcare workers and members of the public (patients/clients and essential caregivers/visitors) must wear mask or face covering at Sault Area Hospital or SAH’s community-based locations. Hospital-approved masks are available at all entrances.

Visitors and essential caregivers who feel unwell are asked to postpone visiting their loved ones until they are no longer experiencing symptoms.
