The Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie took over GFL Memorial Gardens on Saturday for its annual Battle of the Sections.

The Soo Greyhounds won against the visiting Windsor Spitfires, and fans contributed $6,083 in the pass-the-cup fundraiser.

The money will go towards vital youth organizations locally, such as THRIVE Child Development Centre, the Rotary Club said in a release.

“This was a great fundraising year for the Battle, one of our highest since we started in ‘95,” said Derek Walz, Battle of the Sections co-chair.

Section 108 won the Battle for the first time in the new Memorial Gardens building, taking home hand-clapper noisemaker prizes from Final Touch Property Maintenance Services to cheer on the Hounds in the next game.

The Rotary Club’s president, Gabriele Scholz-DiTommaso and THRIVE member Tra Shaganash also participated in the puck drop during the game’s opening ceremonies.

“It’s great to watch the people enjoying the game and helping our local youth projects just by donating what’s in their pockets," Walz added. "I would also like to thank all the Rotarians with their families and friends who participated with this successful event.”
