Local organizers raising funds for kidney disease research are looking forward to the annual Kidney Walk on Sunday, September 25.

“Once again, we will be doing the virtual format – hopefully for the final time. Next year, we hope to celebrate our 20th year, in-person,” a release states.

Opening ceremonies will take place online at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Walkers are encouraged to set out and do their own walk with family members or a group of friends in honour of kidney patients.

The local goal was to raise $18,000 for this year’s event but over $20,000 had already been raised as of Friday afternoon.

Teresa Disano is this year’s local Kidney Walk ambassador. A part of the Kidney Walk for over a decade, Disano is a member of Team Third Chance. The team held a pub night fundraiser August 31 at Centre Ice Bar & Grill through which they raised over $5,300.

Christina Kenny and her Team Tassone have raised almost $2,500 so far.

Tracy Patrick - who has been what organizers call “a phenomenal fundraiser” for the Kidney Foundation annually - has raised over $7,400 so far.

Sponsors for the local Kidney Walk include SooToday, Evolugen, USW Local 2251, USW Local 2724, PUC Services, N1 Solutions, KiSS 100.5 FM and Country 104.3 FM.

Walkers are welcome to share photographs from their walk this Sunday to #KidneyWalkCanada.

More information on the Kidney Walk nationally - and how to register for the local walk - can be found on the organization’s website.

Fratelli’s Kitchen will be offering 15 per cent of all pizza proceeds to the Kidney Foundation all day Sunday.
