Korah group gets ready to put on a jazzy show (4 photos)

Tickets going fast for Middle Eastern dinner, Indian dancing show

Korah Musical Theatre's talented young performers are giving it their all for an ambitious, colourful production of Disney's Aladdin Jr.

SooToday visited Korah over the weekend to watch a dress rehearsal.

Disney's Aladdin Jr. is a theatre musical adapted from the animated Disney film Aladdin, and is a "happy-ever-after" story of a poor young man (Aladdin) and a princess (Princess Jasmine) meeting and falling in love, aided along the way by Aladdin's friend, the Genie.

The show is produced by Liisa Steinwedel and directed by Denine Williams, Korah Collegiate music teacher.

"We're adding a lot to the musical part of the show, we're adding a lot of tap-dancing and jazz, plus we're adding a pit band, because the Aladdin Jr. production usually just comes with a piano and vocal score," Williams said.

There are about 80 Korah students involved with the production, including performers, the pit band, audio and lighting assistants and other production staff, Williams said.

Aladdin Jr. runs from Wednesday February 17 through Sunday February 21.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. February 17 to 19, 1 p.m. February 20, 3 p.m. February 21.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, and are available at the Kiwanis Community Theatre Centre box office or at Korah.

The Friday February 19 show will be preceded by a dinner at 5:30 p.m., prepared by Chef Dessaghen Rungasamy of Mauritius (a small island nation in the Indian Ocean).

The menu will feature Middle Eastern food and the event, inside a specially-decorated Korah Collegiate cafeteria, will be accompanied by traditional Indian and Mauritian dance performances.

Tickets for the dinner and a show event, a fundraiser for Korah Musical Theatre, are selling fast.

Tickets for the dinner are $20 for adults and $10 for students and seniors, with the combined dinner and a show experience on sale for $40 for adults and $20 for students and seniors.
