The owner of a local multi-unit residential building is facing $47,000 in fines for various Ontario Fire Code offences.

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services announced the fines this morning after levying them against the owner on Wednesday.

The Fire Code offences include:

  • failing to maintain smoke alarms in operating condition
  • failing to have portable extinguishers maintained and tested
  • failing to test smoke alarms annually
  • failing to post fire emergency procedures

“We take Ontario Fire Code violations very seriously as they can pose significant risks to the safety of tenants,” said Deputy Chief Naomi Thibault. “Such penalties send a clear message that we will not tolerate negligence when it comes to complying with the Ontario Fire Code."

The fire department did not release the address of the building or the identity of its owner.
