Man arrested for bear spray attack in Elliot Lake

30-year-old faces numerous weapons charges; victim sustained minor injuries

A 30-year-old is facing multiple charges after a person was bear sprayed on an Elliot Lake street.

East Algoma OPP say the incident occurred on May 3 around 7:45 a.m.

Below is the full press release from police. None of the allegations have been tested in court, and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.

On May 3, 2023 at approximately 7:45 a.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a disturbance related occurrence on Mississauga Avenue in Elliot Lake.

The complainant reported that a person was bear sprayed by a man on Mississauga Avenue near Dieppe Avenue. A description of the man and direction of travel was provided to police. The complainant also took a picture of the man who police recognized and were familiar with.

Police observed the man running through yards and failing to stop when directed but was eventually arrested a short time later. The person who was sprayed sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Andrew Gaudette, 30 years old of Elliot Lake, was arrested and charged with:
    •    Assault with a weapon (three counts)
    •    Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
    •    Administer noxious thing with intent to endanger life of cause bodily harm
    •    Carrying concealed weapon
    •    Escape lawful custody

The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on May 4, 2023.
