New North to host 'Baskets for Full Bellies' fundraiser for Harvest Algoma

New North Greenhouses is hoping to mitigate some of the food security concerns with rising food costs with a fundraiser this spring, the company announced in a news release today.

"Baskets for Full Bellies" - baskets of annual flowers planted by New North - will be available for pre-purchase at New North's website or by phone at 705-779-2168. The cost per basket is $55 plus HST. Only 100 baskets will be available.

With rising food costs, food security is top of mind for so many local families. This spring, New North Greenhouses is excited to bring you a new promotion that will beautify your home as well as raise money for a much-needed local food resource program.

New North Greenhouses is hosting a fundraiser known as "Baskets for Full Bellies" to benefit the United Way Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma District’s Harvest Algoma Food Resource Centre. The funds we raise will be used to help fill the bellies of local people in need.

United Way’s Harvest Algoma is a food resource centre that supports over 60 local and Algoma district social service agencies, programs, organizations, and community groups in accessing food for their clients. One of the ways they do this is by supplying high quality, nutritionally dense meals, weekly to shelters such as Pauline’s Place, The Verdi Men’s Shelter, and organizations such as Salvation Army and The Indian Friendship Center. During the busiest weeks they produce upwards of 1900 individual meals on top of food accessible in the warehouse. About 70 per cent of the food used comes from donations, food rescue and their own greenhouse (during operating season). When food is purchased, they do their best of buy from local farmers.

On average United Way’s Harvest Algoma supplies between 8 to 14 thousand pounds of food to about 8 thousand individuals and families a month through various programs.

New North Greenhouses has planted one hundred 14” coco-lined hanging baskets with a beautiful assortment of annual flowers. There are two different colourful mixes to choose from: 50 each of the Hawaiian Summer and Summer Solstice mixes. $10 from the purchase of each of these gorgeous baskets will be donated directly to United Way SSM-Harvest Algoma, making a difference in our local community.

Baskets for Full Bellies will be available for pick up at the Garden Centre around the third week of May, weather permitting. Each customer will be notified by phone when the pickup date has been set.
