No snow, but lots of fun for Bon Soo School Olympics

Lack of snow didn’t prevent Sault and Algoma high school students from enjoying games like tug of war and giant table tennis

Despite the almost complete absence of snow, students from secondary schools across Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma District enjoyed friendly competition at the annual ABCD (Action for Building a Community that is Drug-Free) Bon Soo School Olympics held Thursday west of The Machine Shop.

“I give the credit to the schools and students. They’ve been so adaptable,” Nicole Kay, Algoma District School Board well-being special assignment teacher told SooToday.

Kay and fellow ADSB teacher Taylor Eustis were two key organizers for this year’s event.

“As soon as they saw we weren’t going to have snow in the forecast the students adapted and came up with games and activities that would work without snow, like giant table tennis, tug of war and giant jenga,” Kay said.

Volunteers from sponsor TD Canada Trust were on hand to assist educators monitor the games.

Chili and hot chocolate were available from The Machine Shop for students and teachers.

As in past years, each high school was competing for bragging rights and a trophy.

Students from ADSB high schools including White Pines, Superior Heights, Korah, Central Algoma Secondary School (CASS), W.C. Eaket Secondary School, Chapleau (JK-12) School and Michipicoten High School participated in the games, along with students from St. Mary’s College and École Notre-Dame-du-Sault.
