New sensory swim program at 'Y' designed for special needs families

A new sensory swim program to meet growing demand in the community has been announced by the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA.

“The YMCA saw a need in the community that required more support,” health, fitness and aquatics manager Cassie Guy said in a news release.

“Once we met with Algoma Autism Foundation to determine what modifications to make, we implemented a swim that is accessible for all to enjoy.”

Sensory swim will take place the last Sunday of each month starting Feb. 26.

The YMCA says it has worked to adapt its services to better provide an inclusive environment to the city’s neurodivergent residents.

The ‘Y’ will have multiple qualified lifeguards to ensure it’s a safe space for everyone participating.

Preregistration is required online or through membership services at the ‘Y’.

The cost is free for YMCA members and $10 for non-members.

All children must be accompanied and always supervised by an adult.

The sensory swim is for children, youth and adults with autism and other special needs, as well as their siblings and/or family.

Parents and support do not need to register, however, participants and siblings must register.

The ‘Y’ has tailored the swim to meet the needs of those on the autism spectrum to allow for social and recreational opportunities that may not otherwise be possible for families.

The swim is for special needs families only, and the main priority is ensuring those who need these types of activities are able to register and not miss out, the YMCA said.

“Sensory swim gives all ages the opportunity to practice their swimming skills as well as stay active and have fun, we wanted to create a safe space that was comfortable for the individual as well as those who support them,” the YMCA’s Guy added.

The YMCA is at 235 McNabb St., east of Great Northern Road.
