The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the critical injury of a 49-year-old woman following a collision with an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) boat on Nepewassi Lake early this morning.

The SIU said preliminary information suggests that at approximately 4:30 a.m. on June 7, officers with the Nipissing West detachment were investigating a domestic disturbance in relation to a call received from a residence only accessible via watercraft on Nepewassi Lake.

While en route to the residence, the OPP boat was involved in a collision with another watercraft.

The female operator of the other boat was seriously injured and taken to hospital in Sudbury. No one was seriously injured aboard the OPP boat.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case. One subject official and one witness official have been designated at this time.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online here.

The OPP put out a press release saying that the SIU has invoked its mandate. “As a result, the OPP will not be able to provide any further information,” said the OPP’s press release, adding that any other inquiries should be directed to the SIU.
