The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says one small new wildland fire was confirmed late Monday evening in the northeast fire district and it is under control.

Meanwhile, six other existing active wildfires farther north are being observed.

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services reports that Hearst 7 (HEA007) is under control at 0.1 of a hectare about 1 km south of Walls Lake and 50 km southeast of Hornepayne.

The six other active wildland fires in the northeast are:

  • Cochrane 8 (COC008), a 35 hectare fire that is being observed. This fire is about 57.5 km northwest of Moosonee.
  • Cochrane 9 (COC009), a 6,022 hectare fire that is being observed. It's east of Parson Lake and 8 km west of the Quebec border.
  • Cochrane 11 (COC011), 3,000 hectares and is being observed. This fire is about 112 km southwest of Moosonee.
  • Cochrane 13 (COC013), a 0.2 hectare fire that is being observed. The fire is about 33 km southwest of Peawanuck.
  • Cochrane 14 (COC014), a 20 hectare fire that is being observed. It's about 30 km south-southwest of Peawanuck.
  • Cochrane 15 (COC015), a 120 hectare fire that is being observed. This fire is about 29 km southeast of Peawanuck.

The fire hazard is generally low to moderate in areas of the Northeast Region located south of Greater Sudbury, and northwest of Moosonee. It varies from moderate to high in the central portion of the region, the AFFES said.
