Bundle up: Snow squall watch issued for the Sault, St. Joseph Island

Snow squall warning remains in effect for Searchmont, Batchawana Bay

Environment Canada has issued a snow squall watch for Sault Ste. Marie and St. Joseph Island. Squalls are expected to move into the region this afternoon, bringing blowing snow and accumulations of about 15 cm.

A snow squall warning also remains in effect for areas north of Sault Ste. Marie, including Searchmont and Batchawana Bay. Between 20 and 40 cm of snow is expected to fall by Thursday morning.

Snow squalls expected beginning late this afternoon.

Hazards:
Local snowfall accumulations near 15 cm.
Significantly reduced visibility in heavy snow and blowing snow.

Timing:
Late this afternoon into Thursday morning.

Discussion:
Snow squalls are expected to move south into the area late this afternoon and will continue into Thursday morning.

Travel may be hazardous due to sudden changes in the weather. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero.

Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. If you must travel, keep others informed of your schedule and destination and carry an emergency kit and mobile phone.

Discussion:
Snow squalls are expected to move into the area early this morning and will be located mainly between Batchawana Bay and Montreal River Harbour. Snow squalls will drift south into Searchmont later this evening.

Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Road closures are possible.

Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. If you must travel, keep others informed of your schedule and destination and carry an emergency kit and mobile phone.
