Two new wildfires were confirmed in the Northeast Region by early evening on Thursday, both in the Sudbury district.

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services said Sudbury 31 (SUD031) is on an island on the east side of Wanapitei Lake. It is 0.1 hectares and is being held.

Sudbury 32 (SUD032) is  0.3 km southwest of Camp Lake, and about 0.5 km northeast of Pine Lake. It is 0.1 hectares and is not under control.

At the time of this update, officials said there are 30 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region: one was not under control, one was being held, five were under control and 23 were being observed.

A fire of note remained  Kirkland Lake 5 (KLK005), at 889 hectares in size, that is now being held. The fire is about 80 km west of the community of Latchford.

"FireRanger crews have established a hoseline perimeter and are making good progress on this fire," the AFFES said.

The firefighting service said the fire hazard is primarily low to moderate across the Northeast Region. Areas north of Kapuskasing and Hearst up to the James Bay have a high fire hazard. The Far North has an extreme fire hazard.
