United Way wants to put the 'fun' back in fundraising

The United Way Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma District wants to shake up this year's campaign. Fundraising leaders are calling on local businesses, organizations, and residents to get involved in exciting and meaningful ways, whether with fun-filled corporate donations, high-energy workplace campaigns, or engaging special events.

There’s something for everyone.

“As we launch this year’s campaign, we want to remind people that supporting United Way isn’t just about making a donation—it’s about making a difference, having fun, and coming together as a community,” says Jon O'Toole, who is heading this year's drive along with Jonathan Boyer. They say they want to inspire more people to get involved.

“We’re ready to leverage our role as a community connector, showcase our impact, and work with our amazing partners to keep our community thriving," added O'Toole.

From workplace challenges to special  events, there are more ways than ever for the community to come together and support those in need—while having a blast doing it, according to a news release. The campaign launch was highlighted by the Bike for United  Way (B4UW) team—a group of dedicated cyclists from the Ontario Public Service (OPS) pedalling from Thunder Bay to Toronto. As they cycled through Sault Ste. Marie, they stopped to visit one of United Way’s Funded Partners, turning their love for cycling into a fun and impactful way to give back to the community.

“While some might see a long ride from Thunder Bay to Toronto as a challenge, these incredible cyclists see it as an opportunity to support United Way and the communities we serve,” said Rayna Evoy, Fundraising Manager for United Way Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma District. “Their dedication reminds us that giving back can be both rewarding and fun.”

The United Way has some suggestions for getting in on the action:

• Host a Workplace Challenge: Build team spirit and do some good by organizing a friendly fundraising competition with colleagues.
• Corporate Donations: Encourage leadership giving by offering fun incentives for businesses that join the cause.
• Special Events: From trivia nights to community BBQs, there’s an event for everyone to enjoy while supporting United Way.
• Volunteering Opportunities: Have a great time giving back with hands-on activities that make a real difference.

“There’s no better feeling than giving back while having fun at the same time,” says Evoy. “Whether you’re hosting a team-building challenge or attending one of our community events, we want everyone to know that fundraising can be fun, engaging, and is a chance to bring our community closer together.”

FUNdraising with United Way is about more than just raising money—it’s about raising spirits, building connections, and having a great time while doing something  meaningful for the community, adds the news release.
