Sault Ste. Marie is looking to widen interest in its Green Initiative Fund.

Sault Ste. Marie's Environmental Sustainability Committee has broadened eligibility requirements of its Green Initiatives Fund in hopes that more groups will apply.

Established in 2021, the fund provides financial support for community projects or activities that demonstrate environmental benefits that also align with city policies.

According to a news release, eligible projects may include greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, water quality improvements/rehabilitation, enhanced energy efficiency, development of healthy and resilient ecosystems, habitat restoration, active transportation, and waste reduction.

The latest version of the fund, which is now accepting applications, widens eligibility criteria to include local schools, school groups, committees as well as unincorporated organizations and collectives with a minimum of two members, operational for at least one year.

Additionally, local non-profits and city departments remain eligible.

Applications are accepted quarterly, reviewed by the ESC, and subsequently recommended for council approval.

The fund, with a total allocation of $50,000 for all projects, operates on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline for the first intake of applications is March 29.

"The Green Initiatives Fund supports projects that contribute to a healthier environment in Sault Ste. Marie” said Donna Hilsinger, Chair of the Environmental Sustainability Committee. “With the fund refresh we hope more community groups will apply to advance sustainability initiatives in our community.
