In the late 1940s, when Italian immigrants arrived to work at the Steel Plant, extreme heat swept across the Great Lakes for the last weekend of August. Daytime highs climbed above 30°C for several days. Another heat wave will arrive by the end of this weekend, but it won't quite reach the same extremes as those roaring 40s.

Friday brings additional cloud cover to the region with the risk of an isolated shower in the late afternoon and early evening. Daytime highs will climb to near 26°C with a southerly wind.

Saturday will be partly cloudy, with afternoon temperatures reaching 26°C and humidex values near 30. There is a slight risk of a few isolated showers or storms crossing the region in the morning and early afternoon.

Even warmer air moves into the region on Sunday under sunny skies, with daytime highs climbing towards 30°C and humidex values approaching 35.

The heat continues into early next week, with daily temperatures climbing to near 30°C.
