West-end house fire sends one person to hospital

Monday evening's electrical fire caused 'significant damage' to house in 400 block of Second Avenue; cause of blaze was damaged extension cord plugged into portable heater

A residence in the 400 block of Second Avenue sustained significant damage following an electrical fire Monday evening.

One person was taken to hospital, but there are no injuries to report.

Crews from Sault Ste. Marie Fire Service were called to the house shortly after 5 p.m. and contained and extinguished the fire, a news release said.

The fire is not considered suspicious. Further investigation revealed the cause resulted from a damaged extension cord plugged into a portable heater.

Sault Fire Services reminds all citizens to only use extension cords for their intended use. They should not be overloaded and must be routinely checked for damage.

PUC Services were also at the scene.
