Mother Nature finally realized that she forgot to send the Sault any snow for the last month and has decided to make up for it this coming week. A much-advertised winter storm will hit the Great Lakes region on Tuesday, followed by another quietly developing storm that could hit the Sault area on Friday.

The heart of Tuesday's storm will hit further east of Algoma, but we will still catch the back edge of the system that contains a good amount of snow. The storm scheduled for later in the week appears to be on the same path as the first. If that forecast holds steady, the two combined storms could bring over 30cm for part of the Sault region by Saturday and closer to 50cm for locations further east towards Sudbury.

Monday will be mostly cloudy, with a few afternoon sunny breaks as temperatures drop slightly to -2°C.

On Tuesday, a significant storm will move into the Great Lakes, bringing snow to the Sault area that starts around noon. Daytime highs reach freezing, but gusty east winds will make it feel much colder. At least 5-10cm of snow will fall by nightfall, possibly double that amount on St. Joseph Island and over 20cm in the Sudbury area.

The snow ends Wednesday morning with storm totals of 15-20cm of new snow for the city, over 20cm for St. Joseph Island and closer to 30cm for areas further east towards Sudbury. Temperatures will fall to -3°C with a north wind and periods of afternoon sun.

Thursday will be mostly sunny with a few afternoon sunny periods. Daytime highs continue to fall and will only reach -5°C.

The next storm should arrive Friday afternoon and continue into Saturday. With colder air in place, the next storm may have more blizzard-like characteristics with blowing snow, reduced visibility and cold windchill values - to go along with much more snow.

Stay tuned throughout the week to see if the second storm remains on track and if it will be worse than the first.
