Zuri and Koda take a walk for a good cause (9 photos)

Zuri and Koda have come a long way to participate in today's Cause for Paws Dog Walk.

Zuri and Koda have come a long way to participate in today's Cause for Paws Dog Walk.

They are a brother and sister who were adopted by Dayna and Nic Lang (shown) and they were born in Pikangikum First Nation which is over 900 kilometres from Sault Ste. Marie as the crow flies.

And that's pretty much the only way to get in and out of the isoloated community.

Nic's sister, Maggie, is a nurse in the community and she has been flying puppies and dogs in need of homes to people who want dogs for years - at least 100 lucky dogs so far, says Nic.

Today the dogs were happy to join dozens of other canines in putting their paws to good use for fellow dogs who may not have been as lucky as them.

Heavy clouds and threat of rain kept a few people away from Kinsmen Park today but participants those who came out stayed dry and had a great time.

They also managed to bring in $13,500 for the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society.

More donations are expected to come in at the office from those who decided not to risk the rain.

Tiana D'Orzio started supporting the cause in a big way this year.

She brought Mollie, a two-year-old mix she and her wife adopted when D'Orzio stepped up to join the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society Board of Directors this year.

D'Orzio came on board as a sponsor of the walk this year and said the changes the local Humane Society has made in her life have been very welcome.

"When the kids started moving out we moved the dogs in," she said with a laugh.

Nine dogs in all.

She and her wife have adopted and paid for needed surgeries to nine shelter dogs since she first became involved with the local Humane Society.

Mollie and one other are medium-sized and the reast of the D'Orzio pack are smaller but they all bring a big smile to D'Orzio's face.

In addition to the walk in Kinsman Park, participants in today's Cause For Paws Dog Walk were also eligible for a number of prizes, could partake in several activities or take in some demonstrations.
