In what was a roller coaster season for the Soo Greyhounds, the 2019-20 Ontario Hockey League season certainly had its highs and lows in the COVID-19 shortened regular season.
The season brought with it some interesting numbers.
Following are some of the ones that stood out:
14-15-3-0 – The Greyhounds were one of just two teams in the Western Conference to have a record below .500 at home with the Sarnia Sting being the other. Both teams finished out of the playoffs in the conference.
257 – The Greyhounds surrendered the seventh most goals in the 20-team loop in 2019-20. Among the seven teams were the OHL’s four non-playoff teams. The team did surrender fewer goals than three playoff teams in the Eastern Conference.
6-17-1-0 – It was a tough season to be in the OHL’s West Division in 2019-20. By comparison, the Greyhounds went 17-7-2-0 against their own division in 2018-19.
40 – Tanner Dickinson’s point total in 64 games in his first OHL season. The free agent pickup finished fifth in rookie scoring in the league.
24.2 – The Greyhounds power play percentage, which was sixth in the league. The team had one of the OHL’s top power plays on home ice, scoring at a rate of 27.6 per cent.
13 – On the penalty kill, the Greyhounds remained dangerous as well. With 13 shorthanded goals, the team finished behind the Saginaw Spirit and Kitchener Rangers for the most in the league.
66 – A career-high point total for third year forward Zack Trott. The 19-year-old also set a career high with 25 goals.
21 – After scoring nine goals in his rookie season, 17-year-old centre Rory Kerins improved on that in a big way with 30 in 2019-20.
632 – The number of faceoffs won by Kerins which put him seventh in the league. He won just under 54 per cent of his faceoffs this year. Bot numbers were tops on the team for players who took more than 500 faceoffs this season.
6 – The number of players with 20 or more goals on the Greyhounds roster in 2019-20.
7 – Having scored 18 goals total in his first two OHL seasons, Joe Carroll more than doubled that with 25 in 2019-20. He finished the regular season with five goals in his final four games and took a step offensively in the second half of the season.
47 – Acquired early in the season, defenceman Billy Constantinou settled in on the Greyhounds blueline and scored eight goals and 39 assists in 52 games with the club.
