ABA offering summer basketball camps

The Algoma Basketball Association is offering summer camps throughout the month of July for elementary school girls and high school girls. It is also planning a summer league for girls who are high school/college/university-aged.

The Algoma Basketball Association is offering summer camps throughout the month of July for elementary school girls and high school girls. It is also planning a summer league for girls who are high school/college/university-aged.

* The elementary camp (girls entering grades 6-8) will be held Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10 a.m. - noon at the Bawating gym beginning on Wed. July 6 and ending on Fri. July 29. Cost is $50 per player with instruction from high school and college players. The first 20 players to register will be accepted by calling Randy Russon at 759-1599.

* The high school camp (girls entering grades 9-12) will be held Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10 a.m. - noon at the Bawating gym beginning on Tue. July 5 and ending on Thu. July 28. Cost is $50 per person with instruction from college players and high school coaches. The first 20 players to register will be accepted by calling Russon at 759-1599.

* And the ABA is planning a girls summer league for high school/college/university-aged players beginning on Wed. July 6 and ending on Wed. August 17 with a playoff night. Games will be played at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Bawating gym. Teams will play a six-game regular season schedule plus playoffs. Registration is by team entry and registration fee is $50 per player. *** SPORTS GOLD TAKES SPRING TITLE:

Sports Gold capped an unbeaten regular season with a 44-30 win over Primo Pizza in the championship game of the Algoma Basketball Association girls spring league played last Sunday at Bawating.

Jessica King was tops for Sports Gold with 13 points, followed by Jen Cronin with 10 and Melissa Stumpo with six. For Primo Pizza, Jaclyn Cummings had seven points and Laura Clement, Steph Davies and Renata Thelland all added six.

Primo Pizza got into the championship match against Sports Gold -- which had the bye -- by virtue of a 25-24 win over the Root River Raptors in a semi-final game that preceeded the title tilt.

Cummings, with 11, and Davies, with six, led Primo. Roberta Reid was tops for Root River with nine points and Sarah Crispell added seven.
