Algoma drops decisions to Lambton, Mohawk

Algoma University saw both their men's and women's varsity basketball teams drop decisions over the weekend.

The men dropped an 86-60 decision to Lambton on Friday while the women dropped a 63-47 decision to Mohawk on Saturday afternoon.

In the men's game, Algoma fell behind early 9-3 but managed to battle back to take the lead early in the opening half. Lambton then went on a 13-4 run to re-capture the lead and they never looked back, holding a 45-31 lead at half-time and cruising to the 26-point victory.

Matt Chaimbrone led the way for Algoma picking up 12 points in the loss with 10 coming in the opening half. Jason Trinier, Stefon Wilson and Brian Smith each had nine points in the loss for Algoma while Cory Glastier chipped in with eight.

For Lambton, Chris Williams led all scorers with 19 points. Dan Bullock added 18 while Guy Recollet and Cole Webster each added 15 points in the victory.

Saturday's women's game saw Algoma drop a 16-point decision at the hands of Mohawk. Algoma, playing without veteran Roberta Reid who missed the game due to injury, fell behind 32-23 at half-time and could not recover in the second half.

Algoma fell behind early and were down 12-4 early in the first half but managed to battle back and take a 15-14 lead thanks to an 11-2 run. A 10-0 run by Mohawk gave the Mountaineers a lead that would not be relinquished.

Neither team shot well from the field as they both shot slightly over 30 per cent in the game.

Lisa Medaglia led Algoma in scoring with 13 points while Melissa Stumpo, who played much of the second half in foul trouble, picked up 10 points in the loss. Jessica King also chipped in with 10 for Algoma.

Rachelle Moore led the way for Mohawk with 18 points while Erinn Belot and Shayla Scott each had 11 points. Susan Shaw-Davis added 10 in the victory.

Both Algoma basketball teams will be back in action at home next Saturday as Niagara is in town. Game time for the women will be at noon while the men will take the court immediately following the women's game at 2 p.m.
