It was a busy weekend for both of Algoma University’s basketball teams as they were on the road for games against Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario University Athletics action.
In Friday’s women’s game, Laurier overcame a 10-point Algoma lead at the half to pick up a 64-49 win.
Ayaka Nakashima and Karly Fracalanza had11 points each for Algoma. Sawyer Fischer chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds.
Brianna Iannazzo had 18 points and eight rebounds for Laurier while Jull Condron had 14 points.
On Saturday, Laurier led by eight at the half before outscoring Algoma 26-4 in the third quarter en route to a 72-37 win.
Nakashima and Dionne Martin led Algoma with eight points each in Saturday’s contest.
Condron led Laurier with 17 points on Saturday. Stephanie Findlay chipped in with 14 points.
On the men’s side, Laurier took an eight-point lead through one quarter and cruised to a 97-42 win over Algoma.
Nicholas Gehlen led Algoma with 18 points.
Kemel Archer had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Laurier while Ali Sow added 16 points.
On Saturday, the Algoma men dropped a narrow 77-70 decision to Laurier in a game that saw Laurier leading by two points heading into the fourth quarter.
Gehlen had 27 points for Algoma while Daniel Humphrey had 12 points.
Sow had 20 points for Laurier. Ntore Habimana added 16 points.
The Algoma teams return to action on Jan. 31 on the road in Sudbury against Laurentian before facing Nipissing in North Bay the following day.
Next home action for the Algoma teams is Feb. 7 against the University of Toronto at the George Leach Centre.
