Algoma, Sault College basketball teams wrap up regular season

Regular season action wrapped up for the basketball teams at both Algoma University and Sault College over the weekend.

Algoma finished the Ontario University Athletics basketball season with home games at the George Leach Centre against the University of Guelph.

In Friday’s women’s game, Guelph jumped out to a 32-6 lead through one quarter in an 84-63 win over Algoma.

Sarah Holmes had 16 points to lead Guelph while Ivana Vujadinovic had 12 points.

Dionne Martin led Algoma with 19 points.

Sawyer Fischer added 11 points and nine rebounds for Algoma.

On Saturday, the Guelph women overcame a 25-13 deficit after the opening quarter to beat Algoma 71-58.

Burke Bechard had 16 points and eight rebounds for Guelph. Modupe Okeowo added 15 points and MacKeely Shantz had 12.

Karly Fracalanza led Algoma with 16 points while Martin had 14.

In men’s action on Friday, Guelph picked up an 83-72 win over Algoma in a game that featured drastic momentum swings in the opening half.

Guelph jumped out to a 35-15 lead in the opening quarter only to see Algoma erase the deficit by outscoring Guelph 25-0 in the second quarter.

Rasheed Weekes led Guelph with 23 points. Trevor Hutton chipped in with 20 points.

Nicholas Gehlen led Algoma with 25 points.

On Saturday, Weekes had 21 points and 13 rebounds as Guelph capped the weekend with a 90-82 win.

Malcolm Glanville had 17 points and Hutton had 16 for the Gryphons.

Gehlen led Algoma with 26 points.

Brandon Dwyer had 15 points for Algoma.

Sault College wrapped up the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association season at home against Mohawk.

On Saturday in women’s action, Liana Hughes and Sam Pocrnic had 17 points each as Mohawk beat Sault College 80-44.

Rachel Guanzon chipped in with 16 points for Mohawk.

Skylar Toms had nine points and nine rebounds for Sault College while Emma Filion chipped in with nine points as well.

The Sault College women wrapped up the regular season with a 71-68 loss on Sunday.

Pocrnic had 29 points and seven steals for Mohawk while Beth Minielly had 13 points.

Grace Mahler had 13 rebounds and 10 assists for Mohawk along with seven points.

Toms had 25 points and eight rebounds for Sault College.

Cassidy Sabourin had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

On the men’s side, Rommel Calura had 27 points and 11 rebounds as Mohawk beat Sault College 84-80 in Saturday’s game.

Cudjoe Masuka added 22 points and 14 rebounds for Mohawk.

Tristen Kamal had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Sault College.

Stephen Miller and Simon Wal also had 20 points each for Sault College while Kevon Clarke had 10 points and 21 rebounds.

On Sunday, Daniel Graham had 27 points as Mohawk won the men’s game 91-82.

Masuka had 23 points and 15 rebounds.

Clarke had 20 points and 14 rebounds for Sault College while Jaylyne Moore-Tucker had 17 points and also had 14 rebounds.
