************************** ALGOMA U BASKETBALL COLLEGE CHALLENGE TOURNAMENT WRAP UP The last three games of the Challenge Cup revealed that the top three teams in the tourney are all competitively close.

Gogebic College defeated Georgian College with a score of 85 to 73. Top scorer for Gogebic College were Gary Leinon who scored 6 three pointers and ended up with 29 points. Top scorer for Georgian was Tab Donaldson with 26 points.

Kirtland College also defeated Georgian College with a score of 92 to 65. Top scorer for Kirtland College was Brian Christian with 20 points. Top scorer for Georgian was JP Amaral with 16 points.

In the last game of the tournament, Gogebic College defeated Algoma University College with a score 93 to 72. This game was close with the score standing at 41 to 39 points in favour of Gogebic College at half time. Top scorer in the first half for Gogebic was Dee Faulkes with 8 points and for Algoma U it was both Andrew Turgeon and Peter Chapman with 9 points each.

In the second half Gogebic College pulled away with several scoring runs. Top scorer for Gogebic in the second half was Rudy Bryant with 12 points and for Algoma U was Cory Glaister with 9 points. Top scorer for Gogebic and the game was Rudy Bryant with 18 points. Top scorer for Algoma U was Patrick Murray with 15 points.

The tourney ended with Algoma U, Gogebic College and Kirtland College all with a 2 & 1 record. Georgian College ended up with a 0 & 3 record.

The Algoma U Thunderbirds next game is an exhibition match agianst Red River College this Friday, October 20th at 7:00 pm at the George Leach Centre.

*** EARLY SATURDAY:

The first game of the second day of the Algoma U Basketball Challenge Tournament proved to be the most exciting game of the tournament thus far.

It was a match between two undefeated teams Kirtland College and Algoma University College. Algoma University College defeated Kirtland College with a score of 81 to 76.

Algoma University led for most of the first half until near the end where Kirtland College went on a 10 to 0 scoring run. The score at the half was 36 to 33 in favour of Kirtland College. Kirtland College's top scorers in the first half were Brian Christian with 10 points and Travis Lynn with 5 points. Algoma U's top scorers in the first half were Andrew Turgeon with 11 points and Zach Wright with 6 points.

In the second half both teams traded the lead back and forth until Algoma U came out on top. Top scorers in the second half for Kirtland College were Brian Christian with 8 points and Matt Thompson with 6 points. Algoma U's second half top scorers were Arial Baptiste with 10 points and Patrick Murray with 9 points. Top scorer for the Algoma University and the game was Andrew Turgeon with 19 points. Top scorer for Kirtland was Brian Christian with 18 points.

*** FRIDAY:

In the first game of the Algoma U Basketball College Challenge Cup, Kirtland College of Roscommon, Michigan defeated Gogebic College of Ironwood, Michigan with a score of 92 to 74.

Kirtland started off the game 16 to 0 scoring run but then Gogebic came back to make it close and down by only 4 points with a score of 40 to 36. In the first half, high scorer for Kirtland College was James Conway with 9 points and for Gogebic College Daniel McBride had 10 points.

Gogebic still kept it close for a while in second half until Kirtland had a couple of scoring runs which eventually led to their victory. Top scorer for Kirtland College was James Conway with 15 points and for Gogebic Colege Daniel McBride with 20 points.

In the second game of the evening, Algoma University College defeated Georgian College with a score of 95 to 50. Algoma finished the first half with a 24 point lead and a score of 49 to 25. Top scorer for Algoma U in the first half was Peter Chapman with 10 points and top scorer for Georgian was Tab Donaldson with 9 points.

Several scoring runs in the second half allowed Algoma to maintain their lead through to the win. Top scorers for Algoma were Peter Chapman with 17 points and Andrew Turgeon with 13 points. Top scorer for Georgian College and the game was Tab Donaldson with 18 points.
