Algoma's women's basketball team tops nationally-ranked Ottawa in OUA action (10 photos)

It was a weekend in which they were hosting nationally ranked opponents and the Algoma University women’s basketball team came away with a split.

The weekend included an overtime win over the fourth ranked University of Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday afternoon at the George Leach Centre locally.

A pair of free throws by Mercedes Ryan in the final minute of overtime were the difference as Algoma beat Ottawa 66-65.

Trailing by a 38-29 margin at the half, Algoma came out and went on a 15-4 run in the third quarter to erase the Ottawa lead.

Algoma’s Karly Fracalanza led all scorers in the game with 29 points. Dionne Martin added 12 while Ayaka Nakashima chipped in with 10 points for Algoma.

Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwo led Ottawa with 16 points while Anne Carr chipped in with 11.

In the men’s game, Ottawa turned a three-point deficit through one quarter into a seven-point lead by halftime en route to an 88-67 win over Algoma.

Ottawa’s Calvin Epistola led all scorers in the game with 32 points.

Camille Musuakala had 15 points while Marlon Kordrostami chipped in with 13 for the Gee-Gees.

Nicholas Cehlen led Algoma with 14 points.

On Friday, the Algoma women dropped a 78-57 decision to the Carleton University Ravens.

Carleton held a 26-13 lead after the opening quarter and Algoma couldn’t recover in the game.

Marlee Ball led Carleton with 19 points.

Alyssa Cerino chipped in with 16 and Jaclyn Ronson had 10 for the Ravens in the victory.

Thais Matte led Algoma with 18 points.

Fracalanza added 10 points for Algoma.

In Friday’s men’s game, Isaiah Osborne had 28 points to lead Carleton to a 98-74 win over Algoma.

Munis Tutu had 18 points for the Ravens while Yasiin Joseph amd Lloyd Pandi had 14 points each.

Gehlen led Algoma with 21 points.

Daniel Humphrey chipped in with 13 points while Devin Miron had 12 and Brandon Dwyer had 11 for Algoma.

Both Algoma teams return to action on Nov. 22 at home against the University of Windsor Lancers.

Tip off for the women’s game is 6 p.m. with the men’s game to follow at 8 p.m.
