Black Sox rally for first GLBL win

A masterful pitching performance and some timely hitting led the Soo Cambrian Mazda Midget Black Sox to their first win in the young Great Lakes Baseball League season.

The Sox battled out a 4-3 win over the Eastern Upper Peninsula Travellers from Sault, Michigan, in nine innings at Sinclair Yards.

The win improves the Sox record to 1-3 on the season as they dropped three straight to open the season before Tuesday night's win.

After falling behind 3-0, the Sox received some timely hitting to get themselves back into the game.

The Sox threatened early on as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning but could not cash in. One inning later the Sox managed to cut into the lead.

Justin Soltys led off the bottom of the third with a double. Adam Carricato then lined a ball off the wall in right centre field to score Soltys as well as himself after a throwing error by the Travellers second baseman, who was trying to throw out Carricato at third.

The ball bounced up the third base line allowing Carricato to score and cut the lead to 3-2.

Three innings later, with the Sox still trailing by a run and Tyler Binkley on third, catcher Jeff Buchan stroked a base hit into right field to score Binkley from third and tie the game.

After two scoreless innings the Sox found their chance in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Rick Mills and Soltys reached base, both by way of walks, and moved up on a wild pitch.

Then, with Tuomi at the plate, the Black Sox veteran hit a hard ground ball that the E.U.P. second baseman couldn't handle. The hit plated Mills to give the Sox the win.

The Black Sox next action will be this weekend when they participate in a tournament in Escanaba, Michigan. Regular season action will continue for the Black Sox on June 29 when they play a double header against the Escanaba Cubs in Escanaba.

The following day the Black Sox will host the E.U.P. Travellers in a 7 p.m. start at Sinclair Yards.
