Cancer Society among winners at "The Tournament" (updated)

When it was over, six winners emerged from the inaugural edition of The Tournament including five division champions along with the Canadian Cancer Society.

When it was over, six winners emerged from the inaugural edition of The Tournament including five division champions along with the Canadian Cancer Society.

Prior to the men's competitive division final, The Tournament executive committee presented the local branch of the Canadian Cancer Society a cheque for the amount of $1,050.

On the ice in front of a strong gathering at the John Rhodes Community Centre, the men's open division final saw Gary Armstrong score two goals to lead the Soo Kings over McDougall Fuels 4-1. Jeff Green and Richard Bishop also scored for the winners while Greg McLean scored the lone goal for McDougall Fuels.

In the women's competitive division, The Hockey Bags beat That Team 5-1 with Melissa Holder leading the way with four goals. Wendy Wallace also scored one goal for the Hockey Bags. Rose Jones scored the only goal for That Team.

The men's competitive division crowned Moose Lodge as champions after defeating the unbeaten Rangers 6-3. Brad Baber and Kevin MacKay scored two goals each for the Lodge while Dave Headrick and Joey Sewell chipped in with one each. Steve Slater, Ryan Yvonne, and Jeff Green scored for the Rangers.

The men's recreation division hosted an entertaining game between Smack Daddy's and Tenaris. Smack Daddy's held off a late rush by Tenaris to defeat them 4-2. Mark Dipasquale scored twice for the winner's while Travis Gauthier and Aarron Gordon had one each. Matt Brown and Mike Fata scored in a losing cause for Tenaris.

In the women's recreation division final that went down to the buzzer, the Mighty Pucks defeated the Sports Gold Killer B's 2-1. Scoring for Mighty Pucks was Theresa Glover assisted by Lori Ballstadt. Nancy Houle scored the winning goal with the assist going to Penny Soulier.
