Colts edge Braves for AUC hoops title

The Korah Colts turned in a three win weekend to claim the Algoma University College High School Senior Girls Thunderbird Classic on Saturday night at the George Leach Centre.

The Korah Colts turned in a three win weekend to claim the Algoma University College High School Senior Girls Thunderbird Classic on Saturday night at the George Leach Centre.

In the championship game, the Colts survived a defensive struggle to beat the Bawating Braves 23-20. Lauren Podolski led the Colts with seven points while Liza Turpin and Larissa Graham scored five each. Stephanie Thayer replied with 11 points for Bawating.

Korah advanced to the championship game of the eight team pre-season tournament with a 41-24 win over Mount St. Joseph. Podolski scored 16 points for Korah while Katrina Huopalainen added seven. Jessica Stone led the Mount with 14 points while Heather Lewis added 11.

Bawating advanced to the final with a 31-22 win over North Bay's St. Joseph - Scollard Hall. Thayer scored 12 points in the win while Scarlett Bordin added 10.

Podolski was named tournament most valuable player after averaging 13 points per game during the weekend.

The girls high school basketball regular season begins on Tuesday with three double headers scheduled. Korah visits Sir James Dunn, St. Basil plays host to St. Mary's and White Pines entertains Mount St. Joseph. Junior games tip off at 4:15 p.m. followed by the senior game at approximately 5:45 p.m
