Colts gallop over Saints (Updated)

The Korah Colts threw their hat into the mix of teams contending for a high school football city championship.

Using a solid rushing effort and a fine performance from the special teams units, the Korah Colts cruised past the St. Basil Saints 35-14 on Friday night in senior division action at Rocky DiPietro Field.

The Colts rushed for 308 yards as a team and ran back three kicks for big yardage in the regular season opener for both teams.

Jon Day opened the scoring with a 12 yard touchdown run in the first quarter before the speedy Jourdan Morin bolted through the Saints defense for a 78 yard major score to put the Colts ahead 14-0 at the half.

Morin then opened the second half by busting out a 75 yard kickoff return to give the Colts a 21-0 lead. Day then punched in another touchdown from 25 yards out.

On the kickoff following the Day major, Tom Reville gave a Saints some life with a huge 88 yard return to close the lead to 28-7.

In the fourth quarter, Pat Koski added a 44 yard touchdown run for the Colts.

The Saints closed the scoring with 51 seconds remaining with an entertaining touchdown.

Quarterback Peter MacNamara started the play by hitting receiver Jordan Zuke for 13 yards. Zuke then pitched a lateral to Anthony Spina, who took the ball the remaining 51 yards for the score.

Colin Edwards hit five converts for the Colts while Daniel Martens converted both Saints touchdowns.

Morin led the Colts offense with 125 yards rushing on four carries. Morin also recorded a 40 yard punt return. Day added 77 yards rushing on 15 carries while hauling in a pass for 13 yards and returning a punt 38 yards.

Defensively for the Colts, Morin recorded 5.5 tackles and Clint Cudmore added five. Tysen Vanderloo made four tackles and two sacks while Jordan Murtonen made an interception.

For the Saints, Spina gained 81 yards on three carries while Kyle Hoffman gained 23 yards on six carries. MacNamara completed six passes for 55 yards including three to Zuke for 37 yards and a pair to Tom Reville for 15 yards.

Defensively, Sean Bellerive recorded six tackles, Mark Porco and Mike Marotta made 5.5 each while Brent Rouble and Victor Fata made 4.5 each.

In the junior contest on Friday afternoon, the Colts defeated the Saints 21-10.

The Sir James Dunn Eagles used their power running attack to defeat the White Pines Wolverines 36-6 on Saturday afternoon in senior division action.

In junior, Sir James Dunn blanked White Pines 12-0.
