Colts gallop to junior football title

Korah will represent Sault Ste. Marie in the junior football NOSSA final on Nov. 4 in Sudbury

The Korah Colts are junior high school football champs.

Korah ran to a 26-0 win over St. Mary’s on Thursday night at Superior Heights to capture the junior football city title.

After a scoreless opening quarter, Korah opened the scoring early in the second quarter as Koen Manchulenko punched the ball in from nine yards out. The convert on the play from A.J. Coccimiglio made it 7-0 Colts.

Korah extended the lead later in the quarter when quarterback Zayn Murdoch slipped in from a yard out to make it 13-0.

Murdoch then hit Manchulenko for an 11-yard touchdown pass. The convert from Coccimiglio made it 20-0 Colts heading into the half.

The Colts took a 26-0 lead late in the third quarter when Peyton Melchiorre scored on a 53-yard touchdown run.

Melchiorre finished the night with 163 yards rushing on 14 carries in the victory for the Colts while Manchulenko ran the ball for 61 yards on 10 carries.

Cam Williamson added 58 yards on the ground for Korah on eight carries while Coccimiglio ran the ball five times for 57 yards.

Aiden Wonch had 6.5 tackles for Korah defensively while Manchulenko had 5.5 and Williamson had five.

Hunter Jackson ran for 53 yards on 14 carries offensively for St. Mary’s.

A number of players were busy on the defensive side of the ball for the Knights, including Marcus Spadafora, who had 12.5 tackles.

Beau-Jeffrey Primeau had six tackles. Heath Desjardin and Wesley Tait added 5.5 tackles each.

With the win, Korah will represent Sault Ste. Marie in the junior Northern Ontario Secondary School Athletics (NOSSA) final against the Sudbury champion in Sudbury on Nov. 4.
