Jeremy Murdoch is anxious for the volleyball season at Sault College to get underway. Training camp for the women's team at the Northern Ave. school doesn't begin for another month but Murdoch has been holding non-standard workouts weekly during the summer. Murdoch is readying for his second season as head coach of the women's v-ball at Sault College and figures the Cougars will improve upon their 2001-02 fifth-place finish within the West Region of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association. Former high school standouts Katie Headrick and Kerri Senko, both from White Pines, head the list of returnees. Headrick plays in the middle while Senko is the libero. Leamington, Ont. (just outside Windsor) product Jocelyn Wilkinson, who plays the power position, is the third returning starter. Newcomers who've committed to the Cougar volleyball program include Candace Kennedy (Bawating), Angela Mei (Korah), Ashley Rathwell (Mount St. Joseph) and Desiree Simon (Mount St. Joseph.) Mei, Rathwell and Simon also played high school basketball last fall but have opted for volleyball over hoops at Sault College. Sault College is reviving its women's basketball program at Sault College in the fall after a 20-year absence. Meanwhile, Murdoch, who has also coached volleyball at Korah the past two seasons, has been meeting with players once a week. "It's informal, it's for whoever can make it. It keeps the girls touching the ball and that's important," he concluded. COUGAR HOOPS: The women's basketball team at Sault College is on the look for players as it marks its return to OCAA competition. The Cougar coaching staff has commitments thus far from former local high school players Jen Cronin (Central Algoma), Jill Esposito (Bawating), Meghan Pluss (Mount St. Joseph), Cara Russon (St. Mary's) and Melissa Sawyer (White Pines) with a number of other locals in limbo. Any player interested in trying out for the Cougar hoops team should call 759-2554, ext. 664.
