A couple of early Benjamin Pouliot tallies helped send the Soo Eagles on their way to a 6-2 triumph over the rival Soo Thunderbirds Sunday afternoon in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at John Rhodes Community Centre.

The visiting Eagles connected early, taking the lead at 2:18 on a Pouliot marker, as he put one past Thunderbirds’ starter Lincoln Mellenthin.

Pouliot then potted another just over five minutes later by converting on the contest’s initial man advantage opportunity.

Coming right back at even strength the visitors connected once again on a goal credited to Trent Hoppe, which was his first in the NOJHL.

The Eagles onslaught continued at 11:31 when Cooper Fredericks notched his team-leading 19th marker.

Getting one back during a man advantage, eight and a half minutes into the middle frame, James Elliot collected his ninth marker of the campaign in scoring on Eagles netminder Jace Knoerle.

Adding another on the power play, late in the second, newcomer Cam Freeman clicked for the T-Birds in his NOJHL debut to bring the home side to within two, after two.

In the third, the Eagles picked up some insurance with 6:27 remaining in regulation on a Caron Doxsey effort.

They then iced the result with an empty netter from Lucas Caulfield in the late-going to wrap-up the day’s scoring.

With the victory, the Eagles improve to 15-6-0-2 and in defeat the Thunderbirds slip to 11-12-1-1.
