Four local teams qualify for Steel City playoffs

Local teams will have a shot at four of six division championships on Sunday at the Steel City International Hockey Tournament in Sault Ste. Marie.

In AAA Major Midget, the Soo North Stars will face Toronto Markham at 10:30 a.m. at the John Rhodes Community Centre in one semi-final while the Vaughn Kings meet the Michigan Soo Indians at 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Gardens in the other semi-final.

The Soo Bantam Greyhounds will play the Northern Ice Cats in one AAA Bantam Minor semi-final at 8 a.m. at the Rhodes. In the other semi-final, the Pittsburgh Bantam Penguins meet Traverse City Pepsi at the Rankin Arena.

In AA Midget, Northside Toyota has advanced and will face the Sudbury Spitfires in the semi-final round at 10 a.m. at the McMeeken Centre while Toronto East End will meet the West End Bruins in the other game at 10 a.m. at the Rankin.

The Blueliners Blackhawks will continue their championship hopes in the Bantam AA division in one semi-final against Keweenaw at 8 a.m. at the PeeWee Arena. The Westfort Maroons will meet Taggs Fort Frances at 8 a.m. at the McMeeken in the other matchup.

Elsewhere, the Detroit Trackers will face the Chicago Young Americans at 8:30 a.m. in one AAA Midget Minor semi-final at the Rhodes. At the Gardens, Copper Cliff will face the Capital Centre Pride at 8:30 a.m.

In the AAA Bantam Major division semi-finals at 10 a.m., the Cincinnati Cyclones will meet the Green Bay Gamblers at the Rhodes while the Sudbury Wolves face the Timmins Technosub Rangers at the PeeWee.
