On Friday night in front of 4,437 fans at the Steelback Centre, the Greyhounds special teams units rose to the occassion and led the homeside to a 5-2 win over the Plymouth Whalers.

Plymouth entered the game on a four-game winning streak while sitting first in the west division and second in the conference.

The Greyhounds connected for three power play goals against the Whalers, who boast the Ontario Hockey League's best penalty killing percentage.

Another key point came midway through the first period when the Hounds found themselves in penalty trouble but managed to kill off four consecutive minor penalties.

Cody Thornton scored two goals and added an assist for the Hounds while singles went to Josh Godfrey, who added two assists, David Kuchejda and Brandon MacLean, who also set up another, into an empty net. Dustin Jeffrey picked up a pair of helpers.

The teams went into the second period tied at 2-2 before Kuchejda and Thornton connected 1:32 apart late in the frame to grab a 4-2 lead and chase Whalers starting goaltender Jeremy Smith from the game.

Hounds goaltender Kyle Gajewski turned in another solid performance on Friday and stopped 18 of 20 shots for the win. The Greyhounds managed just 17 shots on goal.

James Neal and Dan Collins scored for the Whalers.

The Greyhounds will put their winning streak back on the line Saturday at the Steelback Centre against the conference leading London Knights. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
