Hockey Notes: Super Series opens Monday

Canada and Russia will once again be centre stage when they open an eight game series on Monday in Russia. The Canadian team announced on Sunday that London Knights goaltender Steve Mason will be the starting netminder on Monday.

Canada and Russia will once again be centre stage when they open an eight game series on Monday in Russia.

The Canadian team announced on Sunday that London Knights goaltender Steve Mason will be the starting netminder on Monday. Mason won 45 games for the Knights last season. The Oakville, Ontario native also racked up 11 assists.

Vancouver Giants forward Milan Lucic was named the team captain on Saturday by coach Brent Sutter while Sam Gagner (London Knights), Karl Alzner (Calgary Hitmen), and Brandon Sutter (Red Deer Rebels) were named assistant captains.

Lucic, along with Soo Greyhounds defenceman Josh Godfrey, and forwards David Perron (Lewiston Maineiacs), Stefan Legein (Mississauga – now the Niagara IceDogs), and Dana Tyrell (Prince George Cougars) are all making their first appearance internationally for Team Canada.

The schedule is as follows:

Game 1 – August 27 at Ufa Arena in Ufa, Russia (9 a.m. EST) Game 2 – August 29 at Ufa Arena in Ufa, Russia (9 a.m. EST) Game 3 – August 31 at Ufa Arena in Ufa, Russia (8 a.m. EST) Game 4 – September 1 at Ufa Arena in Ufa, Russia (6 a.m. EST) Game 5 – September 4 at MTS Centre in Winnipeg (8 p.m. EST) Game 6 – September 5 at Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon (8 p.m. EST) Game 7 – September 7 at Enmax Centrium in Red Deer (10 p.m. EST) Game 8 – September 9 at GM Place in Vancouver (8 p.m. EST)
