Hogan takes top honour at ACT Awards

Brittany Hogan capped off an outstanding season on Wednesday night with one more victory.

The Korah student was named the winner of the Percy Bedford Award winner as the female high school athlete of the year at the Marconi Club on Wednesday night. Hogan beat out Bawating's Sarah Crispell, five-sport athlete Kathleen Thorburn of St. Mary's College, Sir James Dunn's Christine Thomas, and White Pines' Emma Pinder for the award.

Hogan competed at the senior level in four sports during her final year at Korah. Nominated for awards in volleyball and badminton, Hogan also played key roles on the basketball and track teams at Korah. Hogan, along with teammate Kayla Odorizzi, competed at the provincial level in badminton after winning the city and NOSSA titles in doubles competition. The pair also won the badminton award on the night.

The Harvey Morrison Award for outstanding contributions to girls' athletics was also handed out to four athletes. Bawating's Vanessa Pipoli, Korah's Meghan Roney, St. Marys' Nicole Marasco, and Sir James Dunn's Leeann Schildroth all received the award. The award is presented to students from each school that, in the opinion of teachers, coaches and fellow students, has made a significant contribution to the overall athletic program at her school.

Other award winners on the night include:

Cross Country Running: Carly Wetzl (Sir James Dunn) – Won city and NOSSA titles

Basketball: Sara Levesque (Bawating) – Averaged 15 points and 15 rebounds this season

Volleyball: Michela Szatanski (Sir James Dunn) – played key role on league and city champions

Curling: Jamie Sammon (St. Basil) – led young team to third place finish and semi-final berth

Track and field: Kaitlin Morin (St. Mary's) – placed first in 100m, 200m, 400m at both city and NOSSA levels; won award for second straight season
