Indians Retain 2nd Place

Soo Indians won the latest crossriver matchup with the Soo Thunderbirds to hold on to second place in the Northern Ontario Jr. A Hockey League with 44 points. The Indians blanked the Thunderbirds 3-0 on Friday night at Big Bear Arena and have now taken four of six games from their Canadian Soo rivals this season. Brennan Poderzay made 21 saves, Scott Pulak scored twice and Sam Yearsley iced the game with an empty netter for the Indians, who play host to the Manitoulin Islanders Sunday at 7 p.m. at Big Bear Arena. "We didn't do much in the first period, neither team did, but I thought we outplayed them in the second and third," Indians' head coach Kevin Cain said evenly. "We need to work on our power play but our defensive game is good." The Indians now have a record of 4-2 since owner Charles Perdicaro fired former coach Jim Capy on Jan. 2.
