Sault Ste. Marie product and paralympic athlete Jessica Tuomela captured a silver medal for Canada to open the ParaPan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The games began on Monday and conclude Sunday.
In the 100-metre freestyle swim, Tuomela posted a time of 1:20.70 to take silver. Tuomela qualified with a time of 1:21.71.
Currently living in Waterloo, where she trains while attending Wilfred Laurier University, Tuomela has one year remaining before completing her degree in Sociology.
