Knights advance to OFSAA hockey

Thanks to a 4-0 win on Tuesday evening, the Knights will move on to OFSAA in St. Catharines later this month

After winning the city high school hockey title last week, the St. Mary’s Knights won the Northern Ontario Secondary School Athletics (NOSSA) title on Tuesday evening in North Bay.

The Knights beat North Bay’s Algonquin Barons 4-0 to win the NOSSA title at North Bay Memorial Gardens.

Johnny Mackin and Kyle Finateri had power play goals for the Knights while Ethan Novello and Josh Mannarino also scored in the victory.

It marked the second game of the day between the two teams.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Knights and Barons skated to a 1-1 tie to wrap up round robin action,

Sam Lake had the lone goal for the Knights in the earlier matchup while Braden Villeneuve scored for Algonquin.

St. Mary’s opened the two-day tournament on Monday with a win and a tie.

The Knights opened Monday’s action with a 5-2 win over Widdifield of North Bay.

Finateri, Theo Smith, and Owen Watson had a goal and an assist each for the Knights.

Nathan Rowe and Chase Wilson assisted on a pair of goals each.

Mannarino and Novello also scored.

Connor Doidge had a goal and an assist for Widdifield while Gage King also scored.

Nick Niro had the lone goal for the Knights as the team wrapped up day one with a 1-1 tie against St. Charles of Sudbury.

Aydan Popovich scored for St. Charles.

The Knights will now move on to play in the AA Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournament in St. Catharines. The four-day tournament is set to begin on March 25.
