Knights blank Wolverines in high school football

St. Mary's improves to 2-1 on the season thanks to the victory

In senior high school football, the St. Mary’s Knights have won back-to-back games after dropping their season-opener on Sept. 7.

The Knights blanked the White Pines Wolverines 43-0 on Thursday night at Superior Heights to open play in week three.

St. Mary’s opened the scoring just under three minutes into the game as quarterback Matti Tucker hit Nicholas Carney for a 37-yard touchdown. The extra point by Micah Cuglietta made it a 7-0 game.

With just over a minute to go in the opening quarter, Jarett Dewar ran the ball in from three yards out to extend the Knights lead to 13-0.

White Pines conceded a safety just under four minutes into the second quarter, making the score 15-0 Knights.

With just under two minutes to go in the second quarter, Tucker hit Will Iodence for an 11-yard touchdown. The convert by Cuglietta made the score 22-0 and the ensuring kickoff going through the White Pines endzone added a single point to the scoreboard for the Knights.

A 19-yard touchdown pass by Tucker to Cole Rivet and convert by Cuglietta made it a 30-0 game in favour of the Knights heading into the half.

A 29-yard touchdown pass by Tucker to Rivet and the extra point by Cuglietta 4:28 into the third quarter made the score 37-0.

The Knights capped off the victory in the final minute of the fourth quarter as Liam Ouellet picked off a pass and ran the ball 83 yards for a touchdown.

Tucker finished the day by completing five of eight pass attempts for 118 yards in the win while also adding 56 yards rushing for St. Mary’s.

Dewar ran the ball 13 times for the Knights for 103 yards and Carney caught three passes for 80 yards.

Grant Mathewson had a strong day for St. Mary’s on the defensive side of the ball with 4.5 tackles and a sack.

Keenan Boissoneau paced the Wolverines defensively with 10.5 tackles while Ben Potter added five.

Quarterback Garrin Pine completed six of 12 pass attempts for 105 yards in the loss while also running for 26 yards on a pair of carries.

Tristen Holzworth caught five passes for 71 yards for White Pines.

The Knights move to 2-1 on the season. White Pines is 0-3.

 The junior game saw the two schools play a controlled scrimmage due to low player numbers for White Pines.

The victory improves the Knights record to 2-1 while the Wolverines fall to 0-3.

Week three play wraps up on Friday night with Korah facing Superior Heights.

St. Mary’s returns to action next Thursday with junior and senior games against Korah while the Wolverines face Superior Heights on Friday night in junior and senior action.

All four games are at Superior Heights with the junior games kicking off at 4:45 p.m. and the senior games following at 7:30 p.m.
