The inability to put together a full 60-minute effort cost the Soo Greyhounds a chance of upsetting the London Knights.

London scored four unanswered goals in the second period and held on for a 5-4 win on Saturday night at the Steelback Centre.

The loss ended the Hounds streak of seven consecutive victories.

The Greyhounds had a decent start and built a two-goal lead by the end of the first period.

Cody Thornton opened the scoring 2:35 in as he rifled his 25th goal of the year past Knights goaltender Stephane Cesar, who looked shaky from the start.

After Patrick Kane tied the score for London with his 30th goal of the campaign, Brandon MacLean put the Hounds ahead with a shot from a tough angle and Josh Godfrey hammered home another goal on the power play for a 3-1 lead.

In a complete turnaround from the opening 20 minutes, the Knights took control in the second period with four unanswered goals.

After Jordan Shine found the back of the net, David Meckler then fired a point shot past Hounds netminder Kyle Gajewski with London on the power play.

Just 58 seconds later, Kane notched his second of the night before the Greyhounds found themselves down two skaters after a pair of penalties. Sam Gagner scored on the two-man advantage and the Knights took a 5-3 lead to the third period.

In the final frame, the Greyhounds came out with some spark and pulled to within a goal early as Jiri Tlusty tipped in Michael Quesnele's point shot on a two-man power play for his eighth goal with the Hounds.

The locals continued to press but the Knights fell into a defensive shell and effectively limited the Hounds from quality scoring opportunities down the stretch.

Gajewski faced 29 shots in the loss while the Hounds fired 26 shots on London.

The Hounds, who sit seventh in the western conference, will hit the road for games in Sarnia on Thursday, Plymouth on Saturday and London on Sunday.

Next home action is Friday, Feb. 2 when the Saginaw Spirit visit the Steelback Centre for a 7:30 p.m. start.
