Greater Peninsula Orthopedics Lake State Classic Approaches

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The Greater Peninsula Orthopedics Lake State Golf Classic, an annual fundraiser for Laker Club grant-in-aid, is set to tee-off June 9-11 at the Otsego Club in Gaylord.

This is the second consecutive year Shane Woolever D.O. and Greater Peninsula Orthopedics has supported the event as its title sponsor.

Riverside Medical Associates and Richard Ganzhorn M.D. of International Orthopedic and Sports Medicine make up another group of physicians that supports the event on an annual basis. They share the Classic's "Grillin' and Chillin'" Sponsorship that provides the post-scramble meal for the participants.

"The support of all our sponsors is heartwarming," said Tom Coates, assistant athletic director at LSSU and one of the event organizers. "Our sponsors not only help make the event enjoyable for those in attendance, but they are also raising funds to help LSSU athletes succeed in the classroom and in competition."

A tradition of thanking and honoring teams and individuals that make a positive impact on the LSSU athletic program was started four years ago at the Classic Bash, which is scheduled this year for 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 10. Last year, in recognition of the 40th anniversary of the Laker hockey program, Laker staff and members of the first team gathered at the event. This year, those in attendance will honor Bud Cooper, one of the architects of the 1966-67 hockey team, to recognize his years of service as an athlete, coach and athletic director.

"We expect some humorous stories from the group of speakers we have lined up," said Coates. "I am sure Bud’s response will be entertaining as well."

This year's Classic Bash is sponsored by Fudge Du Locke. A silent auction that includes a tour of the Detroit Red Wings locker room, golf packages and unique Laker items, starts during the Bash and continues through the scramble the next day.
