Laker icers drop opener at Miami
RedHawks score three unanswered goals in the third period
OXFORD, Ohio - Miami scored three unanswered third-period goals to pull away from Lake Superior State and win Friday's Central Collegiate Hockey Association game, 4-1, in front of 3,156 fans at the brand new Steve Cady Arena.
Miami (19-10-4 overall, 14-7-4 CCHA) took a 2-1 lead in this season's cluster series against LSSU (15-13-3 overall, 9-11-3 CCHA). The RedHawks and Lakers play the final game of their four-game series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Oxford.
Miami's Nathan Davis scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 4:43 of the third period, but the RedHawks extended their lead on goals by Ryan Jones at 11:07 and Matt Christie at 18:15.
Miami also scored the first goal of the game, going ahead 1-0 on an Alec Martinez goal at 2:54 of the second period.
LSSU's Derek A. Smith tied it, 1-1, with a power-play goal at 10:42 of the middle stanza. Trent Campbell and Troy Schwab drew assists on the Laker goal.
The Lakers finished 1-for-5 on the power play and held Miami scoreless on five power-play opportunities.
LSSU goaltender Jeff Jakaitis totaled 33 saves, while Miami netminder Charlie Effinger stopped 18 of 19 shots on goal.
