Lakers leave Ferris St. with a point

Ferris State's hockey team ended its streak of three straight ties versus Lake Superior State on Saturday night when the Bulldogs beat the Lakers 3-1 in the two teams' fourth meeting of the season.

Ferris State's hockey team ended its streak of three straight ties versus Lake Superior State on Saturday night when the Bulldogs beat the Lakers 3-1 in the two teams' fourth meeting of the season.

The two teams skated to a scoreless first period despite FSU outshooting the Lakers 18-7 in the period.

Freshman forward Josh Sim put the Lakers ahead by one goal at 8:43 of the second period. Defenseman Barnabas Birkeland assisted on the goal.

Ferris State's (11-8-6, 6-6-5 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) Mark Bomersback tied that game at 9:20 of the third period. His tenth goal of the season was scored on the power play. Greg Rallo and Eric Vessely assisted on the goal.

Corey Couturier scored the Bulldogs' game-winning goal at 15:07. Vessely picked up his second assist of the night. Matt Frank also picked up an assist.

With a little time left in the game, the Lakers pulled goaltender Jeff Jakaitis in favor of an extra attacker to try and tie the game.

Bomersback scored his second goal of the night on the empty net at 19:05.

The Lakers were 0-5 on the power play. Ferris State was 1-4.

FSU outshot the Lakers 35-29. Jakaitis totaled 32 saves.

Lake Superior State will return home on Friday, January 27 when it will face Bowling Green in CCHA action. The puck will drop at 7:35 p.m.

Lake Superior State and Ferris State skated to their third tie of the hockey season Friday night when they ended the game in overtime at 2-2. Junior goaltender Jeff Jakaitis made 42 saves for the Lakers.

Ferris State (10-8-6 overall, 5-6-5 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) winger Nick Scheible put his team on the board at 4:06 of the first period. Scheible scored on the power play off an assist from Adam Welch and Brendan Connolly.

Lake State (12-6-5 overall, 8-6-3 CCHA) captain Steve McJannet tied the game at one at 11:08 of the first period. Defenseman Ren Fauci assisted on the even-strength goal.

Assistant captain Nathan Ward gave his team its first lead of the night four minutes later. Ward scored his fifth goal of the year on the power play. Dominic Osman and Jakaitis assisted on the goal. Jakaitis's assist was his first as a Laker.

Neither the Bulldogs nor Lakers scored in the second period.

FSU's Matt Verdone tied the game at 7:28 of the third period. Verdone's 12th goal of the season was assisted by Zac Pearson.

The Bulldogs out shot the Lakers 44-20.

Ferris State was 1-7 on the power play. Lake Superior State was 1-6.

Jakaitis earned Perani Cup first star of the game honors.
