Lakers pick up win on Canadian soil

In a home weekend that saw them play on the Canadian side of the International Bridge, Lake State picked up a win at the GFL Memorial Gardens

The Lake Superior State Lakers picked up valuable Western Collegiate Hockey Association points over the weekend.

In addition to that, the school also played its first game at the GFL Memorial Gardens and picked up a victory in action on Saturday night in WCHA action against the University of Alabama Huntsville.

Brayden Gelsinger and William Riedell had a goal and an assist each as the Lakers beat the Chargers 4-1.

Jacob Nordqvist and Ashton Calder also scored for Lake State in the win while goaltender Mareks Mitens made 24 saves.

Alabama Huntsville goaltender Mark Sinclair made 29 saves in the contest, which included 15 stops in the opening period.

Tanner Hickey had the lone goal for the Chargers.

In Friday’s series opener, the teams skated to a 0-0 tie through 65 minutes of action.

With an extra point on the line, the teams skated through a second overtime scoreless before the Lakers picked up the extra point as Yuki Miura scored in the shootout.

Following the weekend results, the Lakers conference record sits at 8-12-4 heading into action at home against Northern Michigan on Feb. 21 at taffy Abel Arena.
