Lakers suffer second OT heartbreaker in three games

Sim tallies both LSSU goals against MSU

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The 17th-ranked Lake Superior State hockey team lost 3-2 in overtime to 11th-ranked Michigan State on Friday at Munn Arena for its second extra-session loss in three games.

The Lakers (13-9-3 overall, 7-7-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) have played to an extra session in four of their last five games and posted a 1-2-1 record in those overtime contests. Including Friday's setback, they also suffered their second one-goal loss in three games against MSU. They are 0-2-2 in their last four outings against the Spartans.

Two teams that have a knack for coming from behind this season didn't disappoint their 5,900 fans. Friday's contest included three lead changes.

LSSU's Josh Sim struck first, scoring an even-strength goal at 6:18 of the first period. Simon Gysbers and Troy Schwab drew the assists.

After dominating most of the first period, Lake Superior State took four straight penalties early in second period and played short-handed for nearly seven minutes. MSU's Nick Sucharski scored the first of two MSU power-play goals, tying the game 1-1 at 5:14. Laker defenseman Ryan Baird's penalty had just ended, but the Spartans had a two-man advantage due to a delayed penalty.

Justin Abdelkader gave MSU a 2-1 lead with another power-play goal at 7:11. The Spartans were 2-for-6 on the power play for the game, including 2-for-5 in the second period.

Sim tallied his second goal of the game and team-leading 11th of the season to tie it, 2-2, at 14:32 of the third period. John Scrymgeour assisted on the play.

MSU's Bryan Lerg scored the game-winner at 2:52.

LSSU freshman goaltender Pat Inglis (5-2-0) totaled 37 saves in taking the loss. He stopped 17-of-19 shots in the penalty-laded second period.

MSU goalie Jeff Lerg totaled 27 saves.

Lake Superior State finished 0-for-6 one the power play.

The Lakers and Spartans meet again at 6:12 p.m. Saturday at Munn Arena. The game will be televised live on FSN Detroit. WSUE 101.3 FM will also broadcast the game with live streaming on www.lssulakers.com.
