Lakers sweep final weekend of regular season

Next up is the opening round of the WCHA playoffs on the road for Lake State

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association regular season came to a close with a pair of weekend road games for the Lake Superior State Lakers.

Playing at Ferris State, the Lakers swept the weekend set, beating the Bulldogs 5-0 on Friday before wrapping up the weekend with a 4-2 win on Saturday night.

On Friday night, Mareks Mitens made 21 saves for the shutout.

Ashton Calder had a goal and two assists to lead the Lakers offensively.

Brayden Gelsinger added a goal and an assist in the win while Jacob Nordqvist and Hampus Eriksson assisted on two goals each.

William Riedell, Brendan McKay, and Pete Veillette also scored for Lake State.

Ferris State goaltender Roni Salmenkangas made 20 saves.

On Saturday, Roman Bengert made 34 saves as the Lakers capped off the sweep.

Louis Boudon had a goal and two assists for Lake State.

Riedell chipped in with a goal and an assist.

Max Humitz also had two points with a pair of assists.

Veillette and Dustin Manz also scored.

Cade Cowalski and Jake Transit scored for Ferris State.

Goaltender Austin Shaw made 20 saves for the Bulldogs.

Next weekend the Lakers will open the WCHA playoffs on the road against Bemidji State. The best-of-3 series begins on Friday night.
