Late goal extends Thunderbirds winning streak

It took a goal with 15.6 seconds to go in regulation time, but the Soo Thunderbirds winning streak moved to six games on Saturday night.

Jacob Kovacs scored in the final minute of play to lift the Thunderbirds to a 2-1 win over the French River Rapids on Saturday night at Noelville Arena.

After a scoreless opening period, the teams traded goals in the middle stanza, setting the stage for Kovacs’ heroics in the third.

Matthew Bazarin had the other goal for the Thunderbirds and finished the night with a goal and an assist.

Nick Smith assisted on both Thunderbirds goals.

Thunderbirds goaltender Dakota Meyer stopped 23 shots.

French River goaltender Chase Johnson stopped 45 shots, including 20 in the final period.

Ty Chambers had the lone goal for French River.

Winners of eight of their last 10 games, the Thunderbirds record improved to 14-9-1-2 with Saturday’s win.

French River’s record falls to 6-17-2-1.

The Thunderbirds wrap up the weekend with a game against the Rayside-Balfour Canadians on Sunday night at Chelmsford Arena.
