LOCAL NOTEBOOK: Elgie claims Canada Cup victory

Scott Elgie cruised to a win at the 2004 Gears Racing Canada Cup mountain bike racing circuit on Sunday.

Elgie finished the 23 kilometre event in a time of 1:11:03.9 to win the Men's Senior Sport 19+ division. Elgie's average speed during the race was 19.42 kilometres per hour.

Meanwhile, Sault native Jesse Jakomait finished fifth in the 48 kilometre Men's Senior Elite race. Jakomait clocked in at 2:17:59.6 for an average speed of 20.87 km/h.

Jakomait finished one minute and 32.5 seconds behind Gears Racing teammate Andrew Watson.

*** ARTUSO WINS IN FLORIDA:

Sault native Jerry Artuso continues to be a main player in the Florida Association of Stock Car Racing (FASCAR) scene.

Artuso captured the checkered flag in the Goodyear Late Model Challenge on Saturday at the USA International Speedway. The event was the third of a 12 race series.

Last year, Artuso, who also runs a modified at the New Smyrna Speedway, captured the FASCAR Goodyear Challenge Series in his limited late model.

*** STING GO CAMPING:

The Sarnia Sting may have landed the Ontario Hockey League's top coach on Monday with the hiring Shawn Camp.

Just three weeks ago, Camp was leading his Guelph Storm to an OHL championship and a trip to the Memorial Cup.

Camp, who had a 62-22-6-0 regular season record and 21-12 playoff record in Guelph, has been to three Memorial Cups as a coach, winning in 1997 as an assistant with Hull, and is the assistant coach on Canada's Under 18 team.

*** PEE WEE SELECTS WIN TOURNAMENT:

The Soo Minor Baseball Association's Pee Wee Selects posted a 4-0-1 record to capture a tournament in Chatham over the weekend.

In the championship game, the Selects beat Woodstock 6-2. The locals advanced with an 8-4 win over North London in extra innings.

In earlier action, the Selects beat Waterloo 17-4, tied Milton 4-44 and defeated St. Thomas 6-4.
